Article Summary

This guide helps you plan a visit to Lover's Beach in Cabo with practical insight on enjoying Land's End from the water and knowing what to expect before you go. It covers the beach setting, access, safety, timing, nearby scenery, wildlife, and photo opportunities so you can make the most of Cabo's famous coastline with confidence.

At the southernmost tip of Baja California Sur, where two waters meet, a golden sand strip sits cradled between towering granite cliffs. This is Lover's Beach, or Playa del Amor, one of the most photographed spots in all of Los Cabos. The Pericú people, who inhabited this coastline long before the Spanish arrived, called the area Yenecamú, meaning between two waters. That name still fits.

The rock formations surrounding the beach, including the iconic El Arco, are 100 million years old, formed from the same granite backbone that runs the length of the Baja Peninsula. Arch erosion continues under constant wave action. No one knows how many more decades or centuries it will stand.

Water access only is part of what gives Lover's Beach its appeal. Cabo Adventures does not disembark at the beach, but our routes cruise past it, offering close-up views and photo opportunities from the water. From our Marina district base, these routes are a natural fit for seeing Land's End offshore.

Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach at Land's End

One detail that surprises many visitors: Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach (Playa del Divorcio) sit back to back, separated by a short walk across sand. The calm Sea of Cortez laps against Lover's Beach on one side. The open Pacific pounds against Divorce Beach on the other.

The contrast is immediate. Lover's Beach is sheltered, calm enough for swimming on most days. Divorce Beach, significantly larger, is a no-swim zone due to Pacific hazards that can knock a person off their feet even while standing on dry sand. The name pairing reflects local humor as much as anything else: love is small and calm, divorce is vast and turbulent.

1. Take in the Scenery on a Coastal Sail

One of the most relaxing ways to see Cabo's coastline is from the deck of a sailboat. Drifting past El Arco, Land's End, and the golden shore of Lover's Beach, you get a perspective that feels personal and unhurried.

The Cabo Sailing & Snorkeling tour includes time anchored in Santa María Bay, where guests can snorkel, paddleboard, or simply float in the calm water. Along the way, you might spot sea turtles, rays, or dolphins moving through the Sea of Cortez. A gourmet lunch and open bar come with it, so the afternoon unfolds at its own pace.

2. Snorkel in Crystal-Clear Waters

Lover's Beach on the Sea of Cortez side is one of the area's prime snorkeling spots, with Pelican Rock near El Arco offering excellent visibility, especially October to November when water temperatures remain warm and underwater clarity peaks.

The Cabo Snorkel & Land's End Arch tour takes you by speedboat past El Arco, the sea lion colony, and Lover's Beach before anchoring at Chileno Bay, Santa María Bay, or Pelican Rock. There, you can dive in with snorkel gear or sea scooters, or glide above on paddleboards and kayaks. Rays, sea turtles, parrotfish, and schools of tropical fish move through these clear, protected waters.

3. Cruise Past Lover's Beach

A full day on the water, split between coastal sightseeing and two calm-bay snorkel stops, gives you sustained views of the Land's End rock formations without the time pressure of a quick panga pass. The Luxury Two-Bay Snorkel tour follows this route, passing directly by El Arco and Lover's Beach before anchoring at two sheltered bays.

4. Get Up Close to the Arch of Cabo San Lucas

El Arco stands three stories tall at the very tip of Baja, marking the point where two oceans collide. Seeing it from the water is the only way to appreciate its true scale. From the boat, you will also spot the golden stretch of Lover's Beach tucked between the cliffs and the nearby sea lion colony.

Both the Luxury Day Sailing and the Luxury Two-Bay Snorkel tour pass directly by this formation, with time to take photos before continuing to a calm bay for swimming and snorkeling.

5. Kayak Along the Cliffs at Land's End

Kayaking offers a quiet, self-paced way to see the rock formations, sea caves, and Lover's Beach from water level. Paddling beneath the granite cliffs, you can linger at angles that larger boats cannot reach. The Snorkel & Sea Adventure tour includes kayaks as part of the gear available at the snorkel stop, so you can paddle the coastline between swims.

6. Walk Between Two Oceans at Land's End

If you visit Lover's Beach by panga, walk across the short sandy trail to Divorce Beach. In less than a minute, you move from the sheltered Sea of Cortez to the open Pacific, where heavy surf crashes against wide, empty sand. Stay well back from the Pacific waterline.

7. Spot Sea Lions at La Lobera

The flat rocks near El Arco, known as La Lobera, host a resident colony of California sea lions. They bask in the sun, bark at passing boats, and occasionally slip into the water with surprising grace. The colony is one of the most photogenic draws at Land's End and visible from most boat routes that pass the Arch. Visitors should note the colony heads north for breeding season in June, July, and August, and is reliably present only from September through May.

8. Add Some Adrenaline With a Jet Ski Ride

Jet skiing offers a fast-paced way to cover more coastline in less time. Guided rides take you along the Sea of Cortez past El Arco, Pelican Rock, and Lover's Beach itself, with a dedicated safety chase boat following the group.

Feel the adrenaline of jet skiing across Cabo’s crystal-clear waters and stunning coastal views.

Whether you are skimming past anchored sailboats or pausing to take in the view of Land's End at speed, it adds a different energy to the trip. The Jet Ski Cabo Adventure includes a speedboat run through the Arch and a two-hour guided ride along the touristic corridor.

9. Watch the Sun Set Over Cabo's Coastline

Evenings in Cabo bring a different kind of beauty, shaped by shifting light, calm seas, and the warm glow of the setting sun. Aboard a sailboat, you can watch familiar landmarks like El Arco, Land's End, and Lover's Beach transform into silhouettes against the fading sky.

The Los Cabos Luxury Sunset Sail tour is a two-hour voyage designed around this daily spectacle. With a small group onboard, gourmet appetizers, and an open bar, the evening feels unhurried, whether you are sharing the moment with a partner, friends, or your own thoughts.

10. Paddleboard in the Calm Waters of Santa María Bay

Paddleboarding is a quiet, active way to connect with the water, and Cabo's coastal bays offer ideal conditions to try it. While paddleboarding at Lover's Beach is not an option, the Luxury Day Sailing tour includes time in Santa María Bay, a protected cove known for its gentle currents and clear water.

After sailing past the Arch, Land's End, and Lover's Beach, the tour anchors in this calm bay. Guests can glide across the surface on stand-up paddleboards, take a swim, or float in the quiet water.

11. Watch for Whales Near Land's End

From mid-November through April, humpback whales migrate more than 6,000 miles to the warm waters off Baja California Sur to mate, give birth, and nurse their young. The waters near Land's End and Lover's Beach sit directly along this migration corridor, and it is common to see breaching, tail slapping, and mother-calf pairs from passing boats.

Peak abundance occurs in March. During whale season, visitors near Land's End may even be lucky enough to hear whales singing underwater, one of the more extraordinary moments available off Baja's southern tip. Gray whales and orcas also pass through the area during the winter months.

12. Time Your Visit for Low Tide

Low tide access can expand the sandy area on the Sea of Cortez side considerably, and arch base walks become easier for visitors who arrive by panga. This is one of the few chances to appreciate the arch's full scale on foot rather than from the water. Check tide charts for Cabo San Lucas before you go.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Lover's Beach

Lover's Beach is worth visiting year-round, with each season bringing something different.

December through April brings dry, cooler weather, peak whale-watching conditions, and the largest crowds. March is the busiest month, with humpback whale populations at their peak and seasonal visitors filling water taxis.

May and June offer warm water, significantly fewer crowds, and mid-70s°F water.

July through September is the hottest stretch, with highs in the 90s°F and occasional afternoon rain. Tropical storms are possible, especially in late summer.

October and November combine warm water, the best underwater visibility of the year, and moderate crowds. Whale shark season opens near La Paz, adding another wildlife option to your trip.

What to Expect on the Beach

Lover's Beach is remote in every sense. There are no restrooms, no food vendors, no shade structures, no lifeguards, and limited cell signal. Peak hours bring more arrivals, especially mid-morning when multiple pangas reach the beach within a short window. Early arrivals get more space and quieter water for swimming.

Tides also matter. At high tide, the usable sandy area shrinks considerably.

Safety at Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach

Swimming on the Sea of Cortez side, Lover's Beach, is generally safe, though conditions vary by day. There are no lifeguards, so always assess the water before going in.

The Pacific side, Divorce Beach, is a different story entirely. Swimming is officially prohibited due to extreme rip currents, a steep underwater drop-off, and powerful shore break. Sneaker waves have been documented reaching dry sand and pulling people into the surf.

The Harbor Master can also restrict boat landings during ground-swell events. If you are visiting Lover's Beach independently by panga, build flexibility into your plans, as access is not guaranteed on any specific day.

What to Know Before Visiting Lover's Beach

Lover's Beach is only accessible by water, typically via a small water taxi known locally as a panga. It is not included as a landing point on any of our tours. While we cruise past Lover's Beach on sailing and snorkeling tours, guests remain on board and enjoy the view from the water.

If you choose to visit independently by panga, confirm your round-trip arrangement before the captain leaves. Agree on a pickup time and bring everything you need:

  • Swimsuit, towel, and sun-protective clothing (UPF shirt, hat, sunglasses)
  • Water and snacks (more than you think you will need)
  • Water shoes or sandals that can get wet
  • A dry bag or waterproof pouch for phones and valuables

Photography Tips for Lover's Beach and El Arco

El Arco is the defining image of Cabo, and the best angles come from the water. Shoot from your panga or tour boat during the approach for a dramatic low-angle perspective looking up at the arch. From Lover's Beach itself, looking back toward El Arco gives you the classic composition of sand, sea, and stone.

Early morning light is most forgiving, with calmer water, fewer boats in the frame, and softer shadows on the rock formations.

Late afternoon brings warm backlight from the Pacific side, creating silhouettes against the sky. Waterproof protection for your camera is not optional, as panga rides produce spray and the landing involves wet conditions.

Making the Most of Your Visit

Cabo Adventures handles the details from the water, so you can stay focused on what is in front of you. From its Marina district base, the team is well positioned for routes that pass Land's End, El Arco, and Lover's Beach.
