What Are Whale Sharks In Cabo Like?

Whale sharks in Cabo are slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet sharks found in tropical and warm-temperate seas. They are the largest extant fish species and, when fully grown, can weigh well over 20,000 pounds and reach lengths easily exceeding 30 feet.

Though whale sharks are technically sharks, their behavior and anatomy do not resemble what many people think of (and fear) when they think of “sharks.” Like whales, whale sharks feed on plankton and other very small nektonic life. They are not aggressive and pose virtually no risk to human divers.

FAQ

When is whale shark season?
They journey to the Sea of Cortez from November to April.
Is it dangerous to swim with Whale Sharks?
No! Whale sharks are known as the "gentle giants" of the ocean and they are filter feeders - meaning they feed on small plankton and tiny micro-organisms. Despite their enormous mouths and thousands of teeth whale sharks pose no risk to humans. Plus with an average swimming speed of about 3 mph combined with the fact that they are already accustomed to swimming alongside humans these animals are very docile creatures.
Can I touch the whale sharks?
Touching a whale shark will disrupt its migration pattern causing stress to the animal and potentially making them vulnerable to predators. In addition chemical secretions on the human body can damage the thin layer of mucus that protects whale sharks from germs and disease. You should respect their distance and listen to the guide if you get too close. However there’s no reason to fear them. You can still swim near them and watch as they slowly and gracefully swim in the ocean.
Are there picture or video services?
Yes our guides will take photos and videos of the adventure and they are available for purchase at the end of the tour. You may also bring your own action camera. It’s the only kind allowed and it will allow you to avoid missing any details on the adventure.
Do I need to know how to swim or snorkel for this tour?
While you don't need to be an expert swimmer swimming skills and the ability to cover a certain distance are recommended for this tour. Whale sharks are known to move so participants will need to actively swim alongside them to fully appreciate the encounter. This dynamic aspect adds to the excitement of the experience. We strongly recommend participants to possess swimming skills due to the possibility of swimming alongside whale sharks during the tour. Rest assured that if you find yourself tired at any point you can easily return to the boat for a break.
