Why Swim with Whale Sharks in La Paz?

La Paz is one of the few places in the world where you can swim with whale sharks. These gentle giants, often referred to as the "gentle giants of the sea," are entirely harmless to humans, feeding only on plankton. Protected by Mexican laws due to their endangered status, whale sharks are a marvel to behold, making this tour a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The whale shark sanctuary in La Paz is a protected area, and interactions are heavily regulated to ensure the well-being of these magnificent creatures. This not only safeguards the whale sharks but also preserves the marine environment for future generations.

How the Tour Works

The Whale Shark Encounter begins with a scenic drive from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz. Departing at 7:00 a.m. from our headquarters at the Cabo San Lucas Marina, you’ll arrive in La Paz around 9:00–9:30 a.m., ready to embark on your unforgettable adventure. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Boarding the Boat

Once in La Paz, you’ll board a small, licensed boat designed specifically for navigating the whale shark observation area. These boats adhere to strict environmental and safety standards, ensuring minimal impact on the marine ecosystem.

  2. Finding the Whale Sharks

With the guidance of experienced captains and crew, you’ll head into the designated observation zone. This area is closely monitored, with a limit of 15 boats allowed at a time to reduce stress on the animals.

  3. Swimming with the Whale Sharks

When it’s your turn, you’ll have the chance to snorkel alongside these magnificent creatures. Swimming sessions are carefully managed, with time limits and small group sizes to ensure a safe, ethical, and unforgettable experience. Each boat is allowed up to 2 hours in the observation zone, which includes travel time in the boat, searching for and swimming with the whale sharks.

  4. Returning to Cabo San Lucas

After your unforgettable encounter, you’ll return to La Paz for a brief rest and lunch before making your way back to Cabo San Lucas. Please note that return times may vary depending on the season and the number of visitors in the area.

Important Things to Know Before You Go

Swimming with whale sharks is a unique and highly regulated experience. Here are some key tips to ensure your adventure goes smoothly:

  1. Respect the Whale Sharks

Whale sharks are protected under Mexican law and listed as an endangered species. Follow all instructions provided by your guides to ensure a safe and respectful interaction.

  2. Patience is Key

Due to strict regulations, there may be some downtime while waiting for your turn in the observation area. A limited number of boats are permitted to operate in the sanctuary at any given time, with entry times assigned by the authorities.

  3. Seasonal Variations

The length of the tour and waiting times can vary depending on the season and the number of visitors. High season may require longer waits for your turn to swim.

  4. Be Prepared for a Full Day

This is a full-day excursion, so plan accordingly. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and any medication you may need, especially if you’re prone to seasickness.
